Ford Employees Served Meals to the Homeless in Washington D.C.

NORWALK, Ohio – A couple of weeks back, Ford employees served meals to the homeless in Washington, D.C., using one of their own Transit vans. The van was specially built for The Salvation Army’s Grate Patrol program and includes a sink, refrigerator, food preparation space, and service window.

The Grate Patrol program is responsible for feeding over 150 people every night in different areas of the downtown D.C. area. Ford is proud to be one of the main contributors to Salvation Army’s program. The first night the Transit was used Ford employees served meals to the homeless in Washington D.C.

Janet Lawson, the director of the Ford Motor Company Fund, talked about how important it is that Ford employees are bettering their communities. By volunteering for The Salvation Army, Ford is making a better living area for themselves and everyone else.

The Salvation Army is very grateful for the donation of the Transit van. With a high-roof and 3.5L V6 engine, the Ford Transit 350HD is the perfect vehicle to serve meals from. Just in time, too, since Grate Patrol had to retire the previous van that was in service for 10 years.

Since Grate Patrol was started over 30 years ago, more than 1.3 million meals have been distributed to the homeless. The Salvation Army has helped more than 77,000 people by offering many different services. Full-time coordinators help with referrals for medical, mental health, and addiction treatment. They also provide assistance with permanent housing, job-hunting, and transportation.
